Meeting Of Denaby Main Miners.

July 1889

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Friday 19 July 1889

 Meeting Of Denaby Main Miners.

Last night a largely attended meeting Denaby Main miners was held at the lodge room, Mexborough, to hear if all tbe underground workmen had received the 5 per cent advance on Saturday,

It transpired that there were about 20 who had not had the advance conceded to them according to the Yorkshire conference of owners and the men on the question. The number did not receive the 10 per cent advance in November last, which created an unsatisfactory impression.

A short time ago these men got an advance of 3d per day, ranging from per cent to 5 per cent, but it is pointed out that the two 8 per cents. conceded were for all underground workmen.

The manager was informed that would be expected to carry that decision out, which he consented to do. The miners very much regret that it has not been carried out, however, bearing in mind the statement the owners that if the agreement not carried out by the masters, the men were in position to enforce it. Last night the meeting appointed a deputation to watt upon the manager as early as possible.

At the close of this business the annual excursion of the Denaby Main miners was fixed for 10th August, to Blackpool.
