Mexborough Drunks

A Mexborough woman named Mary Emmott, was ordered to pay a shilling and costs for having been drunk and disorderly at Conisbrough, early in the previous morning.

She admitted she had had some drink, but denied she was disorderly.

A policeman saw her at 12-20 a.m. in Doncaster Road, Conisbrough, shouting and making use of very bad language. He refused to go away when requested, so he locked her up. There was a crowd of people about.

The Chairman (surprise): A crowd of people about at that time?

Yes sir, she was making such a disturbance people came out of their houses.

PC Playfoot said the noise the woman was making could be heard 200 yards away.

A labourer named James Murray was ordered to pay 5/– for a similar offence at Mexborough. He promised the magistrates he would sign the pledge for 12 months if they would deal leniently with him.
