Extension to Be of Brick
Pertinacity Rewarded
At a meeting of the Conisborough Education Sub-Committee yesterday, Mr. H. Gomersall presiding, the Clerk (Mr. W. H. Jones) reported receipt of a communication from the County authority to the effect that the extension of the Conisborough Middle School in brick had been approved.
The extensions, which will practically duplicate the existing accommodation, with the addition of a gymnasium, were originally to have been carried out in wood at an estimated cost of £7,600, the estimated cost of the work if carried out in brick being £9,600.
The Chairman said that only by the pertinacity of that committee had they been able to achieve their object.
Mr. Pascoe said the chairman was personally to be congratulated on his share, and the chairman said Mr. Collins had also rendered valuable service.
Referring to the provision of a new gymnasium, Mrs. E. Levers asked what precautions were taken to see that children unfit to take part in physical training did not harm themselves.
The Chairman approved of physical culture, but teachers should take care to see that only children who were thoroughly fit should avail themselves of these facilities.
The Clerk said if there were cases of overstraining they were caused by the keenness of the children. If the teachers knew children were unfit they were not allowed to take part.
The Clerk reported that Mr. F. Roberts, metalwork master at the Middle School, who had obtained an appointment at Newcastle, would terminate his duties at the end of the week and would be succeeded by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, from Bradford.
The tender of Mr. F. J. Law, of Mexborough, of 3s. per instrument for tuning the school pianos at Conisborough and Denaby was accepted.
The chairman referred to the fact that Mr. Collins and Mr. Charles Webster were attending their last meeting as members, and paid tribute to the useful service both had given.
Mr. Pascoe associated himself with the chairman’s remarks and proposed a vote of thanks to the chairman.
Mr. Tom Morgan seconded the vote, and Messrs. Collins, Webster and Gomersall made suitable acknowledgment.
