Midland League
Reserve Teams Lead the Way.
The reserve teams of Bradford, Grimsby Town, Nottingham Forest and Notts County occupy the four leading the Midland League, and all were successful on Saturday.
Mexborough’s New Forward.
Mexborough Athletic, at home before 2,000 spectators, put up a creditable display against Notts Forest Reserves who, however, just about deserved their 2—1 win. Quantrill provided the Forest with an early lead, increased by Heslop in the second half, during which Annables got through for Mexborough.
Much interest was taken in the appearance of Bolan, Mexborough’s new centre forward who did fairly well against the Forest defence, in which Coyles and Burton, with Porter, the centre half, were dominant players.
After Bradford Reserves had built up a half-time lead of 3 – 0, Denaby United played up remarkably well in the second half, and were only beaten 4 – 3 at Park Avenue. Scott and Pacey (3) scored for Bradford, and Adams (2) and Siddall replied for Denaby.
Adams led Denaby’s forwards well and the wingers were speedy and clever. Wilson played a fine game at centre-half; the backs were a sound pair, and Brannon kept a splendid goal.
Chesterfield Reserves provided a delightful game at Wombwell. The result being two – two. In the closing stages Chesterfield staged a remarkable rally. Taking the game as a whole, the honours were fairly shared. Wombwell’s goals were scored by Waring and Briggs, Orr and Binks replied for Chesterfield. Briggs was the live wire of the Wombwell attack and Ellis did much good work. Wood gave a fine display in goal.
Scarborough, although beaten 3 – 0 put up a very good show at Mansfield, and it was anybody’s game until near the end, when an own goal settled matters. Hill was outstanding for the visitors.
Notts County Reserves beat Barnsley Reserves 4-1 at Meadow Lane, but, if the County had taken full advantage of their chances they would have won more easily. Barnsley lucky to be on an equality at the interval following a score by Coglin for apart from occasional breakaways by Barnsley Reserves, Notts were always the masters of the situation in the second half.
Frickley in Remarkable Match.
Rotherham United Reserves put up a fight against Grimsby Town Reserves at Mill more, and did not deserve to lose 3 – 2
In addition to the four goals each scored by Newark and Frickley at Newark, the framework of the goal was struck seven times.
