Worksop Town Again Regain the Leadership.
Beating Castleford Town in the return match at Worksop, on Saturday, Worksop Town again regained the leadership of the competition, though only by virtue of a slightly better goal average than Scunthorpe United.
Fred Banks, Worksop’ Town’s right-winger, was married at Nottingham on Saturday morning, and scored for his club in the afternoon. This goal allowed the home team to equalise, Roe having scored for the visitors. Later, Charlesworth gave the lead to Worksop, who won 2-1. There was a vast improvement in Worksop’s forward line, all the men playing well, though Lilley was too selfish to be effective Worksop just deserved their victory in a stubbornly-contested game.
At Oakwell, Barnsley Reserves beat Mansfield Town 2-0, Retford scoring a goal in each half. Turner showed tricky footwork, but ho often held on to the ball too long. In the second half Retford and Ruddlesdin both hit the woodwork with great drives. Barnsley were deserved winners.
Nothing could have been more glaringly deliberate than McMurray’s foul on Walker, for which, at Mexborough, the Hull City man was promptly sent off the field after fifteen minutes. The Hull team were disorganised after the resultant penalty kick, taken by Cox had been converted. The same player got through in the second half. Mexborough quite overran their visitors, but Sargent brilliantly reduced the margin of Hull’s defeat.
Wombwell scored a remarkably fine 4-0 victory over Notts Forest Reserves at Wombwell. The home side were on top all the time, and it was due very largely to Bennett’s clever work in the Forest goal that the visitors were able to cross over on level terms. The skill and perseverance of the home forwards were rewarded in the second half, Bolsover soon scoring twice and thus crediting himself with twelve of the last thirteen goals scored for Wombwell. Redfearn netted from a penalty and Woods got a fourth. The home forwards played very smartly.
Lincolnshire Clubs Do Well.
The Lincolnshire clubs in the competition had a very tine day, not one being defeated. After having the bulk of the play, especially in the second half, Doncaster Rovers could only draw with Lincoln City Reserves, no goal being scored. The non-success of the home team was duo principally to the fine play of the Lincoln defence, Clint being especially fine in goal, though they failed to accept many chances, their finishing efforts being faulty. The absence of Smithurst, through injury, was a severe handicap.
A draw of one goal each just about reflected the play in the match between Grimsby Reserves and Scunthorpe United. There was much exciting and fast play, and a good deal of unnecessary vigour was shown, with the result that there was very little football. Lloyd scored first from a corner, and McEachran (penalty) -equalised for Grimsby.
Boston, at home, beat Notts County Reserves 2-1, after being in arrears in the first half, throughout which the visitors were the better side. In the second half, however, Boston were very much the superior and pressed heavily, Fisher having to save many fine shots. Woodlands scored for Notts, and Parrish and Manning for the home side, who had two capital wingers in Brockson and Melson.
The meeting of Gainsborough Trinity and Rotherham County Res, provided one of the most peculiar matches seen at Gainsborough this season. Trinity monopolised the play during nearly the whole of the first half, yet crossed over in arrears, Elliott having scored from a breakaway. Play was much more even in the second half, but Trinity’s equaliser was obtained in extraordinary fashion. One of the backs placed the ball for the custodian to take a goal-kick, at the some time turning the ball over with his foot. The goal-keeper then went to the ball and changed its position, but went back several yards preparatory to kicking, whereupon Talbot put it into the net, as the ball had been played. The referee awarded a goal. Talbot scored Trinity’s second and winning goal. Rotherham defenders played finely.
