Midland League Results

Lincoln Reserves Spring a Surprise.

Away teams had bad time the Midland League on Saturday, but curiously enough the only home team to lose were Loughborough Corinthians who, previous to last Saturday, had not dropped a point at home. Loughborough lost to Lincoln City Reserves.

Barnsley Reserves at home were much too good for Rotherham United Reserves, and would have won a bigger margin than 3—1 had the inside forwards finished better. Pigg, the Barnsley leader, who accomplished the “hat trick,” was often prominent, and Curran, who was seen to advantage, made the openings for two of the goals. Wright, who scored Rotherham’s only goal, revealed good method, but Morris held up Rotherham’s left wing. Portman and Colley did good work in Rotherham’s overworked defence, and Turner acquitted himself well in goal.

Lincoln City Reserves just deserved to win 2—l against Loughborough Corinthians, for they were quicker on the hall than the home team. Loughborough missed several chances of scoring. The Lincoln defence played well, McConville and Ward, the backs, being outstanding. McConville and scored for Lincoln, and Higginbottom (penalty) for Loughborough.

Mexborough Winning Again.

Mexborough Athletic, after five successive defeats, returned, at home, winning ways defeating Doncaster Rovers Reserves 3—0. The Mexborough attack was improved by the inclusion of Jones, Hewitson, and Stevenson. The two first-named formed an effective left wing, and Hewitson scored two of the goals, while Stevenson was a good working partner for Green, who got Mexborough’s other goal. The home half-backs were better in defence than in attack, and Ward, as usual, was safe in goal. The Rovers were good in approach work, but finished weakly.

After showing up prominently for the first half-hour Park Avenue, Wath Athletic were decisively beaten by Bradford Reserves 6—3. Wath’s weakness was at half-back. Bratley and W. Moore defended stubbornly, whilst Nettleton made creditable first appearance in goal. Bradford were served best by Quantrill, Hogg, and Geldard. F. Moore opened the scoring for Wath, but goals by Hogg (2) and Quantrill enabled Bradford to change over leading 3—1. Further scorers for Bradford were Dickinson (penalty) and Dinsdale (2). F. Moore and Hargreaves replied for the losers.

Grimsby Town Reserves almost let victory slip out their grasp in the match with Notts County Reserves. Grimsby held a lead of 4—1 at the interval, but the second half the Notts men made bold bid to wipe off the arrears, and were onlv beaten 5—4. The goal scorers were; for Grimsby, Glover (2), Cooper (2), and Moulson; for Notts, Merritt (2), James, and Fisher.

Staveley’s Good Draw.

Denaby United gained a well-earned victory at home over Chesterfield Reserves. The hardest worked man on the field was Edwards, Chesterfield’s goalkeeper, and he made several fine saves. Denaby’s goals were scored by Green (L.) 2. and Green (A.). Parle got an easy goal for the visitors, and Taylor (S.) scored from a corner. Jobe and Hopkinson did well for Chesterfield, while Woodhead. Hill, Hancock. and the Greens were Denaby’s best.

Staveley continue to hold level points for matches played, and on Saturday drew 2 —2 with a strong Hull City team. Staveley took the lead with goal scored by Revill, who hung on to Grundy until that player attempted to kick away; Revill kicked at the same time, and the ball went into the far corner of the net. Sanson equalised. Staveley went ahead again through Tremelling. but Walsh made the scores level in the second half.

Mansfield Town were right back to the top of their form on Saturday at Field Mill when they defeated Nottingham Forest Reserve 6—1 The team all round played sparkling football, but the outstanding man was McLachlan who in the second half put four goals. He scored three of the four within five minutes one period. Other scorers were Murphy and Gibson. Stocks from penalty scored for the Forest. Forest lost Atherton, their goalkeeper, at half-time, injured, and Oakes went into goal.
