Minutes of previous meeting

The minutes of the meeting held on 20th September 2011 were read and it was proposed by J. Gwatkin and seconded by E. Crabtree that they be passed as a true record.

Matters arising

J. Lovell reported that he had received a telephone call at the end of September from Mayor Peter Davies who was aware of the problem which had arisen as a result of DMBC demanding that the Memorial should be fenced off due to health and safety concerns. Together with J. Beachill and J. Reeve he had met Amanda Carr on site on 3rd October. She had insisted that a metal fence would be required and it was asked whether DMBC would subsidise the cost involved of £2500 to £3000. However, on 13th October an e-mail from J. Beachill advised that the matter had been resolved to our satisfaction. There would now be just a small hedge around three sides of the perimeter which will be provided by DMBC. The Chairman had e-mailed Peter Davies thanking him for his interest in the matter. B. Dalby stated that he had recently seen Clive Kirk who advised that he had not yet ordered the material for the Memorial due to the uncertainty outlined above. As Amanda Carr has already confirmed that planning permission will not be required J. Lovell will contact Clive Kirk to update him on the recent favourable developments.

Conisbrough Library is prepared to display the piece of coal which is currently on the former Earth Centresite. A visit will be arranged through Kingswood, the owners of the site, to check its dimensions etc. It was agreed that discussions should be held with Kingswood to create the Memorial Garden which had been proposed some years ago when the site was still the Earth Centre. With regard to the donation which had been promised from Kingswood it would appear that the company have been awaiting final confirmation that the Memorial has been given the go-ahead. J. Reeve pointed out that Willmott Dixon have been appointed as contractors to build the £7 million education facility.

J. Lovell advised that Steve Phillips from Denaby Juniors F.C. had generously offered to donate the substantial sum of £1000 as well as make up any shortfall which may be required next year in order to achieve the Group´s objectives. The Treasurer reported that the concert by Thurnscoe Harmonic Male Voice Choir held on 8th October had made a net profit of £529 which included £271.30 from the raffle held on the night. The Chairman will forward a letter of thanks to the Choir and the Treasurer will write to RiB Group Ltd who kindly provided sponsorship of £150 for the Marks & Spencer Gift Vouchers which were the 1st and 2nd prizes. B. Jones was thanked for organising the event which all agreed had been a success. P. Davies had videoed the concert. The Treasurer circulated a statement showing a balance of £1818.23 in the Group´s current account as at 17th October and gave a breakdown of income and expenditure to date.

J. Dutchman had provided contact details for Steve Mace who is an NUM official at Maltby Main and a member of the National Executive. He is prepared to sell badges at Maltby Main and has asked the Group to advise the amount which we would like the National Executive to donate to our funds. B. Moore is selling 37 copies of the book “A Century of Struggle” at £5 each. The total of £185 raised will be divided equally between the NUM and ourselves. He also confirmed that he had been informed by Chris Skidmore that NUM Headquarters at Barnsley have agreed to make a donation.

S. Hamilton drew attention to an article in the South Yorkshire Times stating that the ASDA Foundation is making donations to local projects and organisations. Applications have to be submitted to the manager of the new store in Denaby Main by 31st October. J. Lovell will submit our application to ASDA and also contact the Co-operative Society in Conisbrough after P.O´ Neill reminded the meeting that they also make community grants. No grants for projects such as ours are now being made by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

The Group will be selling badges and calendars at the Thurnscoe Local History Fair on Thursday 20th October and the Doncaster Family History Fair on Saturday 29th October. D. Bunch and C. Eames offered to assist on the 29th.

J. Lovell had been contacted by Linda Carlton who offered to help with admission on the door for the Stars in Their Eyes concert on 19th November. Posters publicising the event will be distributed by the latter. B. Jones suggested the Dearne Playhouse at Goldthorpe as a good venue for another concert by Thurnscoe Male Voice Choir in 2012. They have a comprehensive mailing list and attract good attendances; the last concert held there raised £1500. Agreed that B. Jones make further enquiries as to dates available.

No further information received regarding publication of the booklet.

Nothing further to report regarding the Facebook site. D. Bunch pointed out that Dearne Valley College are looking to involve their students in projects and it may be to our advantage to contact them. The Chairman advised that he had been contacted with regard to giving a talk at Campsall and R. Thomson said that Ravenfield Primary School was also interested in a presentation about the events of July 1912.

Through his junior football contacts Steve Phillips may be able to assist with an invitation to the Duke of York to attend next July. S. Hamilton raised the matter of Conisbrough Castle being involved in the commemoration event although Sarah Hughes, who has been leading their community project, is no longer in that role as funding for her post has ended.

Any Other Business

R. Thomson pointed out that a marquee may need to be hired for the commemoration day together with gazebos. It was agreed that within the near future we need to discuss both arrangements for catering on the day and police marshalling of the parade.

Next Meeting

This will be held at Denaby & Cadeby Miners´ Welfare on Tuesday 15th November commencing at 7.15pm.

There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.40pm.
