Mischievous Boys at Denaby

Digby Yates, John Senior, William Senior, Albert Wigfield, George Weldon, and Enoch Emery, six lads, were charged with committing damage to bricks and grass, the property of Denaby Main Colliery Company, on the 3rd inst.

Mr. H. H. Hickmott appeared for the prosecution, and stated that £10 worth of bricks belonging to the company had been damaged and a quantity of grass destroyed by various parties, and they had determined to put a stop to the nuisance.

P.C. Midgely stated that on the day in question he saw the six defendants in the colliery company’s field. They were running about on the bricks and broke a number of them. The boys ran away as soon as they saw him, but he chased them and caught some of them.

Some of the lads were carrying wood from a heap of bricks for the purpose of making a raft to float on the pond.

P.C. Kendal identified the six defendants as been present in the company’s field and breaking the bricks.

Mr Chambers, manager of the colliery, stated that the defendants committed damage to the amount of a shilling each, the company had suffered damage to the extent of £10.

The defendants were each ordered to pay one shilling damage 6d fine, and 5 shillings cost.
