Old People Centre
Misunderstanding at Denaby
Members of Denaby over 60s cannot believe that the new Conisbrough and Denaby old People’s welfare centre is to be built for them and, if it is, they object to it being built in Conisbrough.
This was reported at Wednesday’s meeting of the Old People’s Welfare Committee by the Denaby over 60s representative, Mrs Annie Jenkinson.
A query passed was why there was nothing on the balance sheet for the collection and donations for the fund for the building.
Mrs Jenkinson explained that the members had refused to take part in the collection to give a donation towards a fund and had decided that because they did not agree with the building being built Conisbrough, they did not believe it was for them at all, and they would appoint only one representative to the Old People’s Welfare Committee.
She also told members that the old people for the committee were trying to get them moved out of the Miners Welfare at Denaby where they meet once a week.
He had asked G. N. Paling, M. B. E., J. P., A member of the Doncaster and District old People’s welfare committee, to talk to the old people and tell them that the building was for all old people in urban area.
Mr R. F. Richardson, secretary of the committee, was very sorry to hear that there was such a misunderstanding. “We are not trying to prevent them meeting in Denaby, but we hope to give them an extra place where they can go at any time of the week.”
Mr Edwardson said the committee had been given encouragement by the area planning officer to be fairly sure of getting land for the building behind the Lord Conyers hotel off Gardens Lane.
It was reported that £101 had been collected and the committee now had a total of £151 towards the cost of the building.
