Monk Bretton 116 Conisboro’ 66
Conisboro’s Consolation.
Although Conisboro’, following their usual rule, lost two points at Monk Bretton, on Saturday, they have the consolation of knowing that they made a very much better fight than they have done in several of their recent matches. To get Monk Bretton down on their own pitch for 116 was not a bad feat at all—it would have required doing by the best set of bowlers in the League.
The “Castle villagers,” indeed, had bad luck in not getting rid of the home team for a considerably smaller score, for the runs were practically made by two men, L. S. Smith (67), and Sweatman (23). The former ought to have been returned run out when he had made 20, and the latter was stumped before he scored, and ought to have been given out caught at the wicket at nine.
Marlborough bowled very well for the visitors, taking five wickets for 36, and would have had a better analysis if Smith had been justly dealt with, for he was the batsman who “brayed” his bowling most severely.
Conisboro’ responded to their opponents’ score with a total of 86, a very good score for Conisboro’, and I believe their best this season. Three of the team got double figures, Farrar and Tomlinson making 16 each, while Nesbitt got 10.
There may be brighter days in store for Conisboro’, but they badly want a win to give the confidence. I happen to know that during the past fortnight overtures have been made to a well-known local player who has not been seen on the cricket field this season, but they have so far failed in their object. If, however, he could be induced to give the village a lift, I believe he would make a tremendous difference to them.
At Monk Bretton. Pymm, for Monk Bretton, took six wickets for 22 runs; Malbro’, for Conisboro’, five for 36.
