More Assaults on the Police

Aaron Severn and Thomas Connor, colliers, Denaby, were charged with being drunk and disorderly and also with assaulting P.c. Evan’s at Conisborough on the previous day.

P.c. Evans-stated that on the date in question, at about 3.45 he was on duty in New Denaby, when he saw the defendant, who were in a very drunken condition, behaving in a very disorderly manner. There was a crowd of people round them, and they were wanting to fight everybody.

He gave them several chances to go away and be quiet, but as they refused, he told them he would have to lock them up. Connor said witness could not lock him up, and then gave him a violent kick on the leg, and Severn struck him several times with his fist. They afterwards commenced struggling, and all three went on the ground, and witness had to call for assistance, which came; and defendants were brought to the Police Station and locked up.. Defendants were remanded in custody until Saturday.

On Wednesday, Aaron Severn and Thomas Connor, colliers, Denaby, were charged on remand with being drunk and disorderly, and also with assaulting, P.c.. Evans, at Conisborough, on November 7th.

The evidence, similar to that given at the previous hearing of the case, was heard and the .prisoners were each ordered to pay 15s 6d including costs for being drunk and disorderly ,’ whilst for the assault on P.c. Evans they were each committed to prison for 14 days without the option of a fine.
