More Results of Conisbrough Fair

George Black, a waggonette proprietor of Mexborough, was charged with being drunk while in charge of a pair of horses at Conisbrough on March 23rd. He pleaded not guilty.

Police-constable Trewman stated that the defendant had been driving a waggonette and two horses. The vehicle had been left standing in the road in such a position that it prevented other vehicles from passing, and the defendant was engaged in an altercation with passengers. The witness went to investigate the matter, and the passengers complained that the defendant had been demanding the fare twice over. According to the officer, the defendant appeared drunk and was not in a fit condition to drive safely.

In his defence, the defendant said that he had been to Hoyland Common with a party and had brought some of them back. He maintained that he had only charged the fare once, though some of the passengers had not paid at all. He denied being drunk and said he had merely been asking for the fares that were owed to him.

The chairman remarked that, unfortunately for the defendant, he had previously been summoned for a similar offence.

George Black was fined 40 shillings and 18 shillings costs.
