Mother Saved Children from Denaby Blaze

Four young children asleep in their Denaby homes were carried to safety late on Christmas Eve by a 28 year old mother and my fireman, when an outbreak of fire was discovered in the front bedroom of a house in Barnburgh Street.

Carried Baby Out

discovering the outbreak in her home, the mother, Mrs Winifred Ryder, of 31, Barnburgh Street, rush to an adjoining bedroom to save her 16-month-old son Colin, and 10 years old Jean Piers, Linda Headley (seven) and a brother, Robert (five), 33, Barnburgh Street were carried to safety by the fireman when the outbreak threatened their home.

Two dressing tables, two beds, an easy chair and clothing were damaged in the fire. Damage is estimated at £60.

Mrs. Bradder had returned home only a few minutes before discovering the outbreak. After carrying the children out of the bedroom she called the Mexborough and Conisbrough fire brigades. Her miner husband, Mr. John Bradder, made unsuccessful attempts to fight the fire with buckets of water.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Bradder told the ” South Yorkshire Times”:” Soon after I arrived home I noticed a smell of smoke. I went upstairs. The front bedroom was in darkness. I pushed the door open and saw the fire. Then I ran into the back bedroom and got the kiddies out.”

To deal with the outbreak firemen had to break into the bedroom through the window.

After the fire Mr. and Mrs Bradder and their son spent the night with Mr. and Mrs. L. Whitehead 6, Barnburgh Street.

The children were little the worse for their experience.
