Mr. B. H. Pickering
Mr. Basil H. Pickering, General Manager of the Denaby, Cadeby, and Maltby Collieries, has been appointed Regional Production Director for the South Yorkshire Coalfield.
In announcing this and other appointments, the Regional Controller of the Ministry of Fuel and Power, (Judge Stewart K.C.) states that the mines in the region have been grouped as provided for in the group scheme decided upon at the end of last year. The grouping is designed to render available to all pits to the maximum possible extent the services of the leading mining engineers in the county, who will, during their tenure of office, be whole time servants of the state.
Mr. Pickering is well known in the mining industry, which he entered in 19O5 at Denaby and Cadeby. In 1911 he became manager of Wath Main Colliery where, with the exception of war service from 1915 to 1919, he remained until 1920. He was then appointed manager of Manton Colliery, near Worksop, before his appointment in 1923 as Agent to Maltby and Rossington collieries. He is a justice of the peace for the Rotherham West Riding area, a member of the South Yorkshire District of the Miner’s Welfare Committee, and a former President of the Midland Institute of Mining Engineers.
In addition to his appointment as Regional Production Director Mr. Pickering will also be Group Production Director over Group 3 in the South Yorkshire area, which comprises 15 collieries: Denaby, Cadeby, Maltby, Rossington, Dinnington, Silverwood, Rotherham Main, Aldwarke, Kilnhurst, Manvers, Barnburgh, Cortonwood, Wath Main, Elsecar and New Stubbin.
Mr. Pickering is already at work on his new duties, having been granted leave of absence by the Amalgamated Denaby Collieries Ltd.
