My Neck Is Broken

Denaby Miner’s Last Words.

Yesterday at the Fullerton Hospital, Denaby, Mr J Kenyon Parker, Deputy Coroner, held an inquest, relative to the death of James Hunt (27), of 73, Doncaster Road, Denaby, which cared in the institution on Friday from the effects of injuries received whilst following his employment in the pit on the previous Tuesday.

Dr. Twigg said death was due to laceration of the brain, followed by inflammation.

James Connail, fitter, of 69, Annerley, Denaby, described the accident, which took place in No. 49 stall of the Denaby Mine.

The deceased, he said, was cutting a sprag out when some coal fell down, knocking the prop with it. The prop caught the deceased on the left side of the head, and he fell with his face downwards. Whilst being conveyed to the gate-end, deceased said, “My neck is broken.’’

Evidence was also given by Joseph Buckland (deputy) and Michael Lally (filler), both of whom described the deceased as a careful man.

A verdict of Accidental death was returned.

Mr C Bury (representing the colliery company) and Mr Walker (H.M. Inspector of Mines) attended the inquiry
