New Car For Surveyor
Opposition At Conisborough
Conisborough Urban Council last night approved by eight votes to four a recommendation that the surveyor be allowed £100 towards the purchase of a new motor-car and £100 per year towards maintenance and cost of cleaning and garaging the car.
Opponents of the recommendation suggested that the Council could not afford the outlay and that the surveyor might use the buses, but supporters said a grant of £40 would be made by the Ministry of Health towards the £100 and the Council could not afford to pay the surveyor for standing about waiting for buses. Mr. C. Webster objected to payment for garaging and cleaning the car but said they could not expect a surveyor to walk 20 or 30 miles a day.
Future Schemes
Mr. H. Gomersall said slum clearance and sewerage extension would involve an expenditure of £56,000. For this he advocated direct labour so that local men could be employed. The surveyor would be put in charge of the projects and if they lost efficiency they would be making a retrograde step.
A letter was received from the West Riding Public Assistance Committee defining the allowance of various reliefs and the Council passed a resolution that allowances of coal should be made to able bodied applicants entitled to all the avenues of benefit.
The Council decided to invite the unemployed to a public meeting on Sunday with the object of making efforts to secure improved scales of relief.
