New Chairman of Conisbrough Urban Council

New chairman of Conisbrough Urban Council elected at the annual meeting on Wednesday, is 79 years old Councillor RH Shephard, who has now been chairman five times.

Councillor Shephard has been on the council for 36 years, having been first elected in West Ward in 1931. He succeeds County Councillor A Haywood.

Councillor Shephard, 57, Tickhill Street, Denaby, is a retired collier. He worked for 53 years at Denaby Colliery, and was president of Denaby Branch NUM for 18 years.

In his younger days, Councillor Shephard was well known as a footballer, having played for Denaby United, Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham Town.

Counsel Patrick O’Neill was elected vice chairman.
