New Conisbrough Surveyor
Assistant Promoted
Mr A.W.R.Taylor, who, in his capacity as assistant surveyor and engineer to Conisbrough Urban Council since the urban district was constituted in 1921, has been associated for 25 years with Mr H Thirlwall, first and only surveyor and engineer to the urban authority, has been appointed to succeed Mr Thirlwall on his retirement on April 6th. The appointment was made by the Council in committee last Thursday and confirmed at the monthly meeting on Wednesday.
The duties of Sanitary Inspector, at present be fulfilled by Mr Thirlwall, will be subject of a separate appointment.
Mr Taylor, who went to Conisbrough with Mr Thirlwall from the Doncaster Rural Council, with whom we had served about 10 years, first in the clerk’s office and later in the Medical Officer of Health’s Department, as a sanitary inspector and surveyor, has rendered valuable service to Mr Thirlwall in the preparation of the plans for the various major schemes Conisbrough Council have brought into existence.
The schemes include the Denaby War Memorial Park, laid down in 1931; the alterations to the Burcroft Sewage Works, Conisbrough in 1938; and the various housing estates, totalling 414 dwelling, all but 60 of which were built by direct labour.
A native of Retford (Notts), Mr Taylor served from April 1915 until April 1990, in the Great War with the Royal Field Artillery, three years been overseas’ service in France and Italy. In the last war he helped materially in Conisbrough’s A.R.P. plans and was the local Report Officer.
Mr Taylor, who has been a member of Wheatley Golf Club, Doncaster since 1914 resides at Drake Head Lane, Conisbrough. He is married and has one son.
