Looking To The Future
With fewer people entering local government, the young people who sit on the democratically elected School Council at Conisbrough Northcliffe High School could be the local councillors of the future.
The school Governors were told on Tuesday that by attending meetings of Conisbrough Council, the pupil-members of the School Council elected a fortnight ago, and referred to on Page 1 of our last issue might be encouraged to go into local government.
Coun. B. Short commented, ‘We are getting fewer and fewer people coming forward to take part in local government. Perhaps one day some of these young people – knowing the procedure after attending local authority meetings – might enter local government.’
Headmaster Mr. Arthur Young said the School Council was to be given ‘real responsibilities’ in the running of Northcliffe. ‘Maybe, for instance, they could organise their own Christmas parties. We are not laying down hard and fast rules about that is ‘outs’ and what is ‘theirs’. He said Council representatives might attend the opening of staff meetings ‘to say their piece.’
Senior Mistress, Mrs. E. Westlake hoped the Council could one day help with old people’s welfare.
