Norwood and Broad

Marriage of Popular Conisboro´ Bride

On Tuesday morning at St Peter´s Church, Conisborough, Captain Gerald Herbert Broad, M.R.C.V.S., (R.A.V.C.), elder son of Mr. Alfred Broad, F.R.C.V.S. and Mrs Broad, St John’s Wood, London, was married to Miss Dorothy Mary, eldest daughter of Mr W.W. Norwood, M.R.C.B.S., and Mrs Norwood, High Street, Conisbrough.

There was a good deal of local interest in the event, the bride being well-known and greatly esteemed in Conisbrough. She has for the past two years, been doing war work as chauffeuse to Mr Caleb Kilner, and J.P., the Conisbrough glass bottle manufacturer.

The bridegroom, who is a veteranary surgeon in practice with his father in London, has served during the greater part of the war as an officer in the Royal Army veterinary Corps, and has spent three years in France, where he has seen the war at very close quarters. Indeed, his horse being shot under him on one occasion. At present he is stationed at Shoeburyness, and attached to an artillery unit.

The bride’s father, who is well known, is also a member of the veteran airy profession, and has been established in the district for a good many years.

The ceremony was attended by a number of relatives and immediate friends of the two families. Unfortunately, the bridegroom’s parents were unable to take the journey up to Yorkshire. There were present in church a large number of Conisbrough people. Wedding peels were rung on the bells and there was appropriate music before and after the ceremony by Mr Albert Fletcher, organist of the church.

The ceremony was performed by the reverent W.A.Strawbridge, M.A., vicar of Conisbrough, assisted by the reverent H.de C.Dallimore. The bride who was given away by her father, won a very pretty costume of cream surge, waste coated with gold, and the simplicity of her white Pan hat was relieved with a gold rose. She carried a bouquet of white carnations. The bridesmaids were Miss Marjorie (Tiggie) Norwood (sister of the bride) and Miss Catherine (Cassie) Pye, of Doncaster. They will war charming court frocks, with short capes, Miss Norwood in elephant grey, and Miss pie in royal blue, and grey hats, with a silver rose in hat and waist. Their bouquets were of pale pink carnations.

Mrs Norwood (mother of the bride) wore a very becoming sand – serge costume with skunk furs; and a flame coloured French toque with black mount and gold trimming.

Lt Thomas Robinson, R.F.A., cousin of the bridegroom, was been invalided from France, acted as best man, and Mr C.A.Wilde, Conisbrough, attended as groundsman.
