Oak ‘Grandmother’ Clock for Gallantry

Mr. J. W. Whimpenny, son of Mr. and Mrs. Whimpenny, recently of Denaby Main and now of Maltby, has received the gift of an oak ‘grandmother’ clock from a London firm in recognition of his gallantry in savings one of their employees from drowning in a London dock. Last November while in London in connection with his work as a transport agent, he saw a man fall into the docks and immediately jumped in and rescued him.

In affecting the rescue he injured his shoulder and was detained for a day or two in hospital. He was very reticent over his brave act and not even his parents knew of it until the clock arrived.

Recently, he won (for the third year in succession) the cup for amateur boxing in connection with the Penistone Grammar School Old Boys’ Association.
