Obituary – Mr George Wilkie

The death occurred on June 6th, at the age of 79, or Mr. George Wilkie, of ‘Ellerslie,’ Thorne Road, Douctvster, formerly secretary and director of the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries, Ltd.

Mr. Wilkie, who was a native of Leven, Fife, was an accountant by profession, and came to Denaby in 1877 from Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was secretary to the Company for nearly 48 years, and he and Mr. W. H. Chambers, now of Clayworth Hall, Retford, who was general manager of the collieries, were close colleagues almost throughout that time.

Mr.Wilkie was appointed a director in 1921, Mr. Chambers having been appointed managing director some years earlier, and they retired together in 1924 when the collieries were acquired by France, Fenwick and Co., Ltd. Mr. Wilkie was also a director of the South. Yorkshire the Hull and Barnsley Railway under the Railway amalgamation scheme of 1920. The South Yorkshire Junction Railway ,was originally built very largely by Denaby and Cadeby shareholders for colliery purposes.

Mr. Wilkie was a very able servant of the Colliery Company, and made a notable contribution to its prosperity by his administration, which was keen, strict, shrewd and informed throughout by the soundest judgment. He concentrated very closely upon his duties, and seen red a very high standard of efficiency in tho commercial management of the undertaking. He made no figure in public life, although socially he was well known and widely esteemed in and around Doncaster, where he had many friends.

He was a Freemason, distinguished in two branches, being a Past Master of St George’s Lodge Doncaster and a  past Z of the Royal Arch.

He was also a very fine golfer, and helped in founding the Doncaster Golf Club 53 years ago, been at that time a scratch player. He is survived by Louise widow (formerly Miss Farr of Scawsby) one son and six daughters
