Obituary
Mr M.P.Knowles
Former Conisbrough Councillor

the funeral took place at Conisbrough yesterday of Mr Maurice Patrick Knowles (70), Horton Villa, Park Road, Conisbrough, who died on Monday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Norman Hulley, “Broad Oak,” Bessecarr, Doncaster.

A native of Bradford, Mr Knowles went to Conisbrough in 1901 to join the staff of Morley Place Council School after having held teaching appointments in Bradford.

He retired in 1937, and for some years was secretary of Mexborough and District Teachers Association. He served in World War I and was for many years secretary of Mexborough and District Teachers Operatic Society.

In 1939 he was elected a member of Conisbrough Urban Council and retained his seat until April this year when, owing to Hill health, he did not seek re-election.

Mr Knowles was a widower. His death, which occurred suddenly, will come as a great shot to his many friends in the many hundreds of Conisbrough men he taught during his 31 years at Morley Place School.

Among the wreaths at the funeral was one from the school staff and another from Mexborough and District Teachers Association.
