Stamford 3 Denaby United 0

Denaby United fought a plucky game at Stamford on Saturday, but they never quite matched their opponents for skill and cohesion. Even so the visitors missed several very good chances, centre forward John Baker being the chief culprit.

As in their previous Midland league visits to Stamford, Denaby showed boundless enthusiasm. A young team, they kept up a furious pace, but lacked that final polish and experience which could have given them the upper hand.

One man on the Denaby defence, however, who absolutely oozed confidence was goalkeeper George Stasiukiewicz,’Stas’, as he became affectionately known to the home crowd, brought off a series of really great saves. His positioning and anticipation were faultless and one save, just before half-time, touched on the miraculous.. Stamford right half Alan Weston hammered a 15 yard pile driver which looked booked to rip the roof of the net wide open. But somehow ‘Stas’ catapulted himself to the left and turned the ball away for a corner.

Stamford led 2-0 at the interval, and added the third after 65 minutes.
