Offences in the Mine
A batch of pit hands were prosecuted at the West Riding Court, Doncaster, on Saturday, for offences of various kinds in the mine, Mr. Clayton Rotherham appearing on behalf of the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Co.
Alfred Hatfield, a joiner, Denaby, was charged with breach of colliery rules by allowing a train of corves to descend an incline without previously giving a signal. Defendant admitted the offence, and was fined 2s. 6d. and 11s. costs.
John Burgess, pony driver, Denaby, who had been previously fined, was ordered to pay 20s. for failing to place a drag behind a run of tubs which was travelling on an incline.
Robert Henry Keith, pony driver, was fined 2s. 6d. and costs for a similar offence.
Noah Skitt, pony driver, Mexborough, pleaded guilty to riding on a corve, and was fined 5s. and costs.
William Langford, filler, Denaby, was ordered to pay 5s. and 11s. 6d. costs for having a match in his pocket when in the mine, and Allen Johnson, miner, Conisborough, was fined a similar sum for being in possession of a box of matches.
John Richardson, pony driver, Denaby, was charged with cruelly ill-treating a pony at the Cadeby Colliery. A deputy proved that he saw the defendant kick a pony under the jaw with his clog, and the pony was unable to eat for four days. A fine of 18s. 6d., including costs, was imposed.
