Old Denaby Village Fete.

Old Denaby Village Fete.

The weather was ideal yesterday for Old Denaby’s annual garden fete, held in the grounds of “Homecroft,” the residence of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Bayes, and the fete attracted many persons from the surrounding district.

The proceeds are to be devoted to the school children’s annual outing in July and to the Old Denaby Church School funds. It was hoped that at least £4O would be raised.

The most interesting feature was the coronation of the Rose Queen, in which ceremony all the children of the village took part. Last year’s queen, Sylvia Earnshaw, had the task of crowning her successor, Margaret Clothier. Sylvia was crowned as Queen Forget-me-not by Minnie Cope. The ceremony presented a pretty spectacle all the children being dressed in colours representative of flowers.

After the coronation, the children, who had been trained by Mrs. Bayes, gave a display of country dancing, and this was followed by a further display of dancing by Mexborough pupils of Miss Vera Wheatcroft, of Sheffield.

There were many other attractions. Beauty and ankle shows excited mirth, the beauty show being judged by Mrs. Coulson, of Mexborough, and the first prize was a permanent wave.

A baby show, judged by Dr. Curry, attracted a large entry. Side shows included coconut shies, “Charlie Chaplin.” darts, football kicking, a joy-wheel, bowling at wickets, and croquet.

Prize-winners at the baby show were:

Up to one year: 1 Brian Cawood, 2 Peter Wilcox; 1-2 years: 1 Gordon Guest. 2 Patricia Crossland; Ankle show : Betty Stephenson and Nancy Drummer.

Dancing in the evening was enjoyed by a large company, music supplied by the Lyric Dance Band.
