Oldest House

A local antiquarian, who called at the Castle Inn, Conisbrough, offered a prize of five shillings to the person who could name the oldest dated house in Conisborough.

The entries were opened this week, and five persons, Messrs G. Ellis, R. Dawson, G. Wells, G. Ward, and W. Wheatley, each named the same, the house in the approach to the Church Hall, which bears a date 1724. The accordingly shared the prize.

There are older houses, some dated, but the dates cannot be deciphered. Probably the Old Hall in Wellgate would win the prize, but only two figures, “16,” are legible over the door.
