One of Three Special Prizes for Denaby Apprentice Engineer

Denaby apprentice engineer Mr. John Mangham (19), of 7, Balby Street, won one of three special prizes awarded to West Riding Further Education students for outstanding work.

It is an F. N. Cook prize for work during his last session on an engineering course at Mexborough Schofield Technical College. His final examination results were outstanding and he has also been awarded a College prize.

The son of Cadeby Main miner, Mr. J. Mangham he is now on a six months ‘sandwich course’ at Bradford College of Technology. He is employed by British Rail at the Doncaser Plant depot and has been attending day release classes at the Mexborough Technical College.

He began work on the railways when he left Conisbrough Northcliffe Secondary School at the age of 15, and he hopes eventually to gain a degree in engineering.

He has two sisters, Anne (17) employed at Swinton G.E.C. Works, and Janet (15) a Denaby shop assistant.
