Mr Charles Smith, who started the first of Smith’s Cycle shops in Conisbrough in 1908, has died in Bridlington, aged 84. A widower, he leaves four sons and six daughters.

He opened his first shop in Conisbrough 1908 between the glassworks and Old Denaby, and he came to Mexborough 40 years ago to open up in Maine Street, a shop now run by his eldest son, Ernest stop

He was at one time a track cyclist and learned the art of making cycles from his father, who was also a cycle make.

In those days a bicycle cost £2 19s 6d. Mr Smith’s son, Mr Ernest Smith, was also a noted track cyclist.

The accompanying photograph shows Mr C Smith in 1910 – with his first car.
