Opening of a New Wesleyan Chapel at Conisbrough
The opening services in connection with a new Wesleyan Chapel at Conisbrough took place on Thursday.
The building, which is in brick, with stone dressings, is in the Italian style of architecture, and affords accommodation for 500 people. The ground being of a sloping nature, this circumstance is taking advantage of by the erection of a large schoolroom and two classrooms underneath the Chapel. All the seats are pitch pine, with mahogany fittings.
The front of the gallery is solid mahogany. The rostrum, communion table etc are all in perfect keeping with the other parts of the Chapel. The whole of the arrangements, with but slight exceptions, are exceedingly good.
The architects were Messrs. Moxon and Son, Barnsley; builders, messrs Downing and Twibey; joiners Messrs. Appleyard & Sons, Conisbrough; Slater, Mr S.Gregory, Doncaster; Plasterer Mr Garner, Rotherham; Iron founders, Messrs. Kenworthy and Atkinson.
The total cost of the building is £3,800, of which about £3,000 had been raised previous to the opening services. In the afternoon and eloquent sermon was preached to a crowded audience by the Rev Dr Pope, president of the conference, and the collection amounted to £125.10s 10d.
