Operetta at Denaby
A Bright performance
An adaptation of “beauty and the beast” in opera form was given by the Denaby Parish Church amateur dramatic Society in the large Hall, Denaby, on Thursday night, before a large audience.
Beauty, the daughter of the rich unhappy millionaire, was given a charming delineation by Miss E.Thorpe. In scene two she sang with excellent effect, “give me only a rose,” and was warmly applauded.
In the role of the beast (or Prince Loretto), Miss C Springthorpe displayed considerable ability. The other two daughters of moneybags, Diva and Prudelia, were represented by Miss G.C.Allen and Miss A.Springthorpe, who made a capital impression. Miss D Hewitt was well suited to the part of Bo-Peep, and sang very nicely. As moneybags, Mr T Holcroft made a great hit.
Miss Eva Alison, as Benovelentia, the fairy Queen, is gay and bright, and in the part of Pertinax (the Demon), Mr Lance Soar was quite successful.
There was a rich vein of humour running through the whole performance, and this was substantially contributed to by Messrs. Harry Moulds, George Platt, Arthur Platt (of gay follies fame) and Reg Soar, whose songs “The Russian quartet,”, “Left, left,” “It’s nice to get up in the morning,” and “an Italian ditty” were well received.
The song, “my little cottage,” was nicely sung by Miss D Hewitt as was that with the fifth scene, “In Japanese butterfly land” by Miss Allan. The first tableau included all the artistes.
The music was tuneful throughout. The accompaniment was provided by the following orchestra: first violins; messes C. Soar, R Soar, and J.Brough: second violins Messrs G. White and J Middleton; cello Mr G Soar; and pianist Mrs E Dabbs.
The arrangements were in the capable hands of the Rev H.B.Greaves and Mr T.T.Allcroft.
