Organ Opening at Conisborough Wesleyan Chapel
The Sunday school officials connected with this place of worship have just purchased a large American organ for their Sunday school.
Such an instrument has been badly wanted for a long time, but it was only recently that they decided definitely to obtain one.
They consulted with Mr J.K.Bateson asked to the best kind of instrument and also what means to adopt to raise the necessary funds, and that gentleman very readily give them as valuable advice and also his services.
A successful cantata was held some time ago, when a substantial sum was raised towards the amount required, and Sunday last special services were held, the Reverend A Stoves being the preacher, and collections were towards this object.
Several anthems were given during the morning and evening services, amongst which were the “stadium,” “In the Lord do I put my trust,” and “The radiant morn.”
The instrument is one of Messrs Bell 75 guinea organs, but through a generous treatment of Mr RJ Pilling, Doncaster, from whom it has been purchased, they got a good discount off the list price.
Mr Bert Clark a talented young man from Doncaster, have been secured for the formal opening of the incident on Sunday last. His manipulations were highly appreciated, and his execution of the “Hallelujah Chorus,” and other music in the evening service was superb.
In other selections were “The Lost Cord” Festival March (by Spinney), and a piece from Wesley’s “Wilderness.”
Mr C Hardy, Kilnhurst, played several selections in a very creditable manner on Monday evening, the piece is being “Cujus Animan” (Rossina), “Intermezzo” (by Maskagni), “Gloria” (Mozart 12th mass).
On Monday evening a sense of song entitled “The California Nugget” was rendered in the chapel when a largely augmented choir was in attendance and an efficient band under the leadership of Mr B Wilson, in his first attempt in the capacity as leader.
The chair was taken by Mr BJ Clarkson, who expressed great pleasure at being able to render any assistance to the Sunday School, and for the Encouragement of Scholars and Teachers.
The connective readings were given in a clear and forcible manner by Mr Caleb Kilner, Miss Blakely presiding at the organ, and Mr Bateson conducting.
Owing to the determined and united effort was being made chiefly through the untiring zeal of Mr Bateson, all the money has been obtained and the instrument paid for, which is a very creditable performance.
The Trustees have backed up the School Officials in a hearty manner, which go a long way toward success.
The following is a description of the new instrument; the same having 10 stops, with 10 sets of reeds, six in the treble and four in the bass.
