Outburst of Gas at Denaby Main Colliery

About five o’clock last evening an outburst of gas occurred at Denaby Main Colliery, putting out many of the men’s lights, and causing them to run to the pit bottom, leaving their clothes, &c., behind them in the workings.

It seems that work was going on as usual, when in No. 31 stall — the west district — a fall of roof took place, liberating a quantity of gas. But as the lamps are of the well-known Mueseler type, and kept in good condition, they all stood the test, and were immediately extinguished.

The manager (Mr. Chambers) at once visited the place, but found all quite safe, the ventilation having completely carried the gas away. There were nearly 300 men underground at the time.
