Pit Breakdown

There was a breakdown in the air compressor at the Cadeby Colliery last Thursday which caused about 800 workers in the Barnsley and Parkgate Seams to have to leave the pit.

The stoppage occurred soon after the morning shifts had commenced work, but repairs were immediately undertaken.

A hold-up occurred at the Denaby Pit on Tuesday, through a broken hydraulic pipe in the shaft which prevented work in the Parkgate Seam. About 480 men and boys had to return home from the morning shift.

Men were able to use the shaft, but coal winding was impossible. The afternoon shift also played, as repairs could not be completed in time for it. Work was resumed at the colliery on the morning shift on Wednesday
