Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 22 February 1878
Pitch and Toss.
Amos Harrison, John Hatton, John Williams, Chas. Rear, John Birks, and William Wilson, all of Denaby, were charged by P.C. Midgley with playing at pitch and toss at Denaby on the 9th inst.
The officer stated that on Saturday, the 9th inst., he was on duty at Denaby-road about five o’clock in the afternoon. He saw a crowd of men who had been witnessing a race, and they afterwards began to play pitch and toss. He watched them for a considerable time, but at last one of them hit him, and they all ran away except Hutton. He ran after them and threw his staff, overtaking one of the group as he went past.
Harrison denied that he had been gambling, he had simply been offering a race for 6d. In reply to Hutton, the officer said it was a foggy night. He told Hutton that if he would tell who had been his companions he would let him go.
Rear said he was not on the spot at all, and Birch said that he was at the premises of the Hall.
Harrison, Rear, and Williamson, who had been convicted of a similar offence before, were each fined 15s., including costs, or 10 days’ imprisonment; and the others were each fined 10s., including costs, or 7 days’ imprisonment.
