Plan To Demolish Old Denaby Church.
Owners “Found”
Ruin Held to Belong To Parish.
One of the old landmarks of Denaby Main, St. Chad’s Church, is likely be pulled down and the stone and site sold.
The building is too dilapidated to be repaired. For a long time the question of the ownership of the building perplexed the Church Council. After many months of inquiry it has now been ascertained that the church belongs to the parish.
The Church Council have had the facts before them, and a scheme is to be discussed for the demolition of the building and the sale of the valuable site. It is understood that there is also a second scheme which is to be considered, and the stone in the building will be utilised the parish for a building purpose.
The church ceased to be regularly used as far back as 1893, and with the building of the large hall services were held there until the present Parish Church was erected.
From 1908 to 1912, when the Rev. F. S. Hawkes was Vicar, the old church was again brought into use as Sunday school. Though it was kept in repair for several years afterwards, it was later abandoned, and is now hopelessly dilapidated.
