Poaching Offence at Cadeby

Issac Jones and Thomas Griffin, miners, new Conisborough, were charged with an offence under the Poaching Prevention Act at Cadeby on 11 September.

The defendants did not put in an appearance.

PC Moore stated that at 10 minutes to one in the previous Sunday morning he was on duty at Cadeby, when he saw the two defendants coming along the road. The pockets appear to be bulky, and as he knew them to be porches he stopped and searched him.

On Jones was found a large net, which was damp, and seven pet pegs which were covered with soil, and appeared to have just been used. On Griffin was found a rabbit in his inside pocket. The animal had its neck broken and was quite warm.

Jones said they had been to Barnburgh, and had only had one set. Griffin acknowledged that it was a fair catch, and said the police must let Jones have his net back, as he got his living by it. (Laughter.)

The defendants were each fined 30 shillings and costs.
