Hint To Prospective Conisbrough Tenants
Conisbrough Urban Council, at their meeting on Wednesday, Coun. J. Humphries presiding, approved a minute of the House Letting Committee recommending that in cases where applicants for Council houses adopt an abusive attitude to members of the committee their names be deleted from the list of applicants.
A further recommendation approved was that Mr. R. J. Troughton (Housing Clerk) be empowered to let houses becoming vacant to the next applicant on the short list for the class of house to be let without reference to the Chairman of the Committee.
Coun. D. Sheldon (chairman of the local Savings Committee), speaking of the fine result of Wings for Victory Week, when about £84,000 was raised, said it was astounding the large amount that was subscribed by the working-class people in small savings. He expressed thanks to all who helped.
Coun. H. Gomersall said most people were looking forward to £100,000 being raised and there was some disappointment that this was not reached.
The Council have granted the use of Conisbrough Crags during Holidays at Home Week (August 8th to 15th), when events will include a church parade on the opening Sunday, band concerts, crowning of the Queen and a fancy dress parade, football and cricket matches and boxing. An agricultural and horticultural exhibition is proposed.
A deputation from the Council has met a representative of the Divisional Food Office to discuss the financial position of the Denaby British Restaurant cash and carry centre and to consider closing it. The Ministry’s representative agreed that closure was not justified at present.
Coun. G. Cheshire (chairman of the British Restaurant Committee) hoped that people would support the restaurant, which was meeting the needs of people in the area.
Mrs. L. Davey has been appointed British Restaurants cook-manageress in succession to Mrs. Saville (resigned). Miss H. Peters has been appointed assistant cook to fill the vacancy caused by the promotion of Mrs. Davey.
