Poor Law Act at Conisbrough
Joseph Hall, stonemason, Conisbrough, was charged with neglecting to contribute towards the maintenance of his wife, who was an inmate of Wadsley lunatic asylum.
Mr John Farrow, relieving officer, stated that on 17 August 1877, under an order of the magistrates, he removed the wife of Joseph Hall to the lunatic asylum at Wadsley. On the following Saturday the board of guardians ordered him (witness) to see Hall and ask him to pay 7s 6d a week towards her maintenance. He saw him, and he said he could not pay 7s 6d but would pay 5s a week. This he did for a time.
He visited his house at Conisbrough three times in September last, but failed to see him. He had written to him twice asking him to show his last receipt etc but had neither seen him nor had he answered the letters.
The board of guardians, therefore, now asked that the bench would make an order for him to pay five shilling a week for the future.
The bench made the order for five shillings a week and costs 10 shillings.
