Preferred Prison

On Tuesday, at the Doncaster Police Court, a case which had previously been before the magistrates was again referred to.

Florence Wilkes, a widow, of Conisborough, was summoned for causing her two children to beg.

A week ago she was given the option of either entering the workhouse or going to prison, it been explained that if she went into the institution she would be medically attended and the children would also be looked after.

She now pleaded to be given a chance. Some of her relatives promised to contribute a pound a week towards her support. She wanted to keep her home together for she live rent free and ad free call, while the daughter was going to come and live with her.

It was pointed out she would be better in the institution, but as she would not consent to go in she was committed to gaol for the month.
