Presentation at Denaby to Mr Wallace

August 1907

Mexborough and Swinton Times August 17, 1907 a

 Presentation at Denaby.

For above six years Mr W. D. Wallace has held the position of assistant engineer at the Denaby and Cadeby Main collieries.

In the middle of July last he resigned his position, in order to take up the important office of engineer at the Dinnington colliery, near Rotherham. As soon as it became known that Mr Wallace was about to sever his connection with the Denaby Colliery Company, the officials and works men employed at these collieries held a meeting in the Rossington Street school room, when it was unanimously agreed that a testimonial be presented to him as a mark of esteem.

A strong committee was chosen, with Mr V. Rose as chairman, and Messrs F. Fisher and R. Engledow as secretary. So highly was Mr Wallace respected that a sum of £25 was speedily collected. Then the committee agreed that this sum should be spent in purchasing a cabinet and overmantel to match.

These articles were supplied by Messrs T. B. And W. Cockayne, Sheffield. Both articles were inscribed as follows: –

“Presented to Mr W. B. Wallace by the officials and workmen of the Denaby and Cadeby Main collieries, as a mark of esteem, on the occasion of his leaving these collieries. – August, 1907.

The presentation took place on Saturday evening last, in the large clubroom at the Denaby Main Hotel, when over 100 officials and work men assembled to show their respect to the recipient. Mr Vincent Rose occupied the chair.
