The Proposed New Church at Denaby Main

Donations from The Archbishop

The church folk of Denaby Main, who have so long been deeply anxious about a new church and the constitution of Denaby Main into an ecclesiastical parish, will hail with considerable satisfaction and pleasure the news that the Lord Archbishop of York has granted the sum of £1500 towards the purpose of the new church at Denaby Main.

This amount is a portion of the money available for disposal by the Archbishop of York under the Marriott bequest, part of which is for the building of churches, and part for hospitals, the former being devoted to the district where the population has outgrown church accommodation.

The Bishop of Beverley, Colonel Ward (of Melton Hall,), and Colonel Hill, recently visited Denaby as a committee to report as to the need for church extension at Denaby Main, and it would seem that the gentlemen mentioned were favourably impressed with the great necessity there is for a proper church to be built here. Indeed there are very few places where the population had increased so rapidly during the past four years as at Denaby Main. It is however, now apparent that the inhabitants are in a measurable distance of having a suitable church erected in their midst, wherein to worship, a site for the building having been promised.

The curate in charge, the Reverend Joseph Brooks, Mr WH Chambers, and Mr G Edwards (churchwarden) and others, who have for some years been eagerly and actively engaged with this object in view, have reason to congratulate themselves upon the prospect of a successful issue attending their labour; and mention should also be made of the efforts in this direction of the Reverend P. Roseveare, who was curate in charge prior to Reverend Joseph Brookes, taking up his duties at Denaby Main.

An appeal will shortly be made for funds to complete the sum required, and an influential committee will be formed for the attainment of so great and worthy an object.

The funds for a new organ (much needed) has met with a fair amount of success, and it is anticipated that the amount already received will shortly be added to.

The desire is, if possible, to obtain an instrument which will be suitably adapted for the new church, when built, and costing about £300.
