Quarter-Mile Parade

Don And Dearne Scouts Bring Colour to Denaby

Scouts and Cubs from groups in the Don and Dearne District took part in a quarter-mile long parade through the streets of Denaby on Sunday, to a special St. George’s Day service for Scouts, conducted at Denaby Parish Church by the Assistant District Commissioner, the Rev. L. G. Bevan, Vicar of St. Hilda’s, Thurnscoe.

At the service was County Commissioner, Sir Harold West, who presented Mrs. Rose Jolly, of Arnold Crescent, Mexborough, wife of the District Scoutmaster, with a Scout Medal of Merit, for her work in the movement which she joined 16 years ago.

It is estimated that Mrs. Jolly has introduced over 250 new members to the organisation, and for the past 13 years she has been District Cubmaster. Her husband received a similar award four years ago.

Mr. B. Green, of Goldthorpe, who received a Bar to his Medal of Merit, retired last year after more than 40 years’ service as a scoutmaster. Miss Hazel Slater, Denaby Cubmistress, was presented with her leather bushman’s thong by Mr. G. R. Barrell, District Commissioner.

Flags and totem poles from the various groups added a touch of colour to the parade as it passed through the streets of Denaby in the afternoon sunshine, headed by a bearer carrying the Cross of St. George and escorted by scouts from the 9th Don and Dearne Group. Denaby Ambulance Band also took part.

Guard of honour

At the entrance to the church a guard of honour was formed by the flag-bearers, and Sir Harold West was greeted by Mr. Geoffrey L. Barrell. The Vicar of Denaby, the Rev. A. V. Roebuck, preached a sermon and Scouts B. Whittaker and T. B. Ashurst gave readings.

Reiteration of the Scout Promise was led by District Commissioner Barrell and of the Cub Promise by Mrs. Jolly.

After the service the parade reformed and Sir Harold took the salute from a base near the church. Mr. Barrell and Miss J. M. Platts, Assistant District Commissioner for Doncaster, were also at the base.
