Rabbiting at Cadeby

Thomas Watson, a miner, Conisborough, was summoned at the instance of Charles Cutts, gamekeeper, in the employ of Colonel Bewicke Copley, Sprotbrough Hall, for having trespassed in pursuit of conies at Cadeby on October 11th.

Mr W Baddiley prosecuted.

Charles Taylor, one of the gamekeepers, deposed that, on the date referred to he and another keeper named Bowman were on duty near Cadeby Main Colliery, and they saw the defendant ranging a grass field with the greyhound dog. He then got over the fence into a second field, which he ranged, and afterwards ranged third field, where he was joined by two other men. The trio ranged still another field, and put up a rabbit. The keepers went up to them, and defendant gave the name and address of George Thompson, of Firbeck St, Denaby.

Witnesse’s suspicions were aroused, and he attempted to examine the dog’s collar, but the defendant frustrated his design by removing the collar. The other men also gave wrong names and addresses, and had not yet been discovered.

Defendant was fined 10 shillings and 17/6 costs.
