Raid on Gamblers at Mexbro’
On Saturday at Doncaster, Amos Rose, of Denaby, and Henry Barker, Thomas Evell, Wm. Long, Wm. Worldale, and Henry Axe, of Mexbro’, were summoned for playing at pitch and toss on Saturday the 23rd inst.
Police-constable Cale stated that Inspector Barrett and Constable Swancroft, and himself, were on duty on ground known as the Recreation Ground near the railway station at Mexbro’, when they found a number of men gambling. The defendants were among them.
The constable watched the men for an hour and ten minutes. In reply to the Chairman (Mr. Yarborough), the officer said the public were allowed to go onto the land in question, and Superintendent Blake agreed that this was so.
The defendants pleaded guilty. Rose, who had been several times previously convicted, was fined 30s., including costs. A warrant was ordered to be issued for the apprehension of Everitt and Worldale, who did not appear, and the rest had to pay 20s. each, including costs.
