Ratepayer’s Meeting.
At the instigation of a number of Conisboro’ ratepayers, a meeting was held on the Conisboro’ Welfare Ground last night. These ratepayers had circularised the urban area inviting ratepayers and also councillors to attend a meeting, so that an account of the Council’s stewardship could be rendered, as the convenors of the meeting considered they had a right to know how their money was being spent.
So many people turned up that the meeting could not be held in the Welfare Hall, as had been originally intended, and it was held in the open air. Mr. C. V. Gillis presided, and said they had not come for any party, but to try to get to know just was ‘going off,’ and how their money was being spent.
Only five councillors attended, and these were Messrs. J. Litherland, and J. I. Webster, and later Messrs. B. Roberts, G. Oldfield and J. T. E. Collins. Mr. C. Jones said that the meeting had been called firstly because ratepayers had a right to know what councillors were doing, and secondly because they did not want their money squandering. Many questions were asked, several of them irrelevant, and eventually the object of the meeting was arrived at, namely an apparent objection to extra expenditure on the part of the Council on housing.
The question of calling further meetings was also raised, and it was decided to hold meetings regularly on the Thursday prior to the monthly meetings of the Council.
