Recreation Ground Offences
Two Denaby dealers, Arthur Day and Samuel Watson, pleaded guilty at Doncaster on Saturday to allowing horses to graze on North Cliff Crags, a recreation centre owned by the Conisborough Urban Council.
P.C. Archer said that on Sunday, April 22nd, he noticed a brown pony running loose on the crags and found that its owner was Watson. Asked if he had permission to allow the pony to graze on the crags, Watson said it had been there only that afternoon and he had no permission.
Another pony owned by Day was also on the crags the same afternoon, and was tethered to a rope. Day also admitted that he had not received permission.
Mr. Spencer Baker (Clerk to the Council) said they had had many complaints and, like the practice of riding bicycles in the recreation ground, it was a nuisance to people using the ground.
Day said he was tending both Watson’s pony and his own that afternoon.
The case against Watson was dismissed, and Day was fined 5s.
Thomas McGovern, miner, Denaby, was summoned for riding a bicycle on the same crags on the same day. Mr. Baker said he did not wish to press this case owing to the circumstances of defendant and asked for costs only.
P.C. Archer said McGovern told him he did not know he was doing wrong. There were notices giving warning to such offenders.
A fine of 5s. was imposed.
