Referee Declares “No Contest” at Denaby.

There was another good crowd at the open air boxing tournament on the Denaby United Football field last night. The chief contest, which was scheduled over ten rounds and was between Les Saunders (Rotherham) and ex-Guardsman Gater (Fdlington) came to an abrupt conclusion after two rounds, the referee, Mr. Sid Breeze, declaring no contest.

Towards the end of this round Gater claimed foul. The referee ordered the men to box on, and after this, Gater’s seconds threw in the towel.

A ten-rounds contest between Ellis Ashurst (Denaby) and Joe Angel (Rotherham), went the full distance. Ashurst winning on points.

Paddy Dainty (Denaby) beat McCartney (Maltby) on points over six rounds, and another six-rounds bout was won by Pete Birkes (Denaby) who beat Fred Brown (Mexborough) who deputised for “D*rkey” Saunders (Rotherham)
