Rent Arrears Problem.

Court Orders Ignored by Conisborough Tenants.

At last night’s meeting of the Conisborough Urban Council, it was reported that many of the Council tenants were in arrear with their rents to the extent of over £5, and that County Court orders and ejectment orders had so far not been obeyed.

The Housing Committee recommended that the accountant, should write to the tenants in arrear asking them to repay in accordance with the County Court orders, and in other cases at the rate of 2s. 6d. per week.

Councillor J. Collins said that a resolution was passed some time ago that arrears should be paid off at the rate of Is per week, and that as wages were lower to-day than they were then he could not see that the time was opportune for an increase of the minimum.

His amendment that the minute be referred back to the committee was defeated, and at the next meeting the Council are to appoint a subcommittee to deal with the cases.

The Chairman (Councillor A. Roberts, C.C.) remarked that some people thought that because they lived in a Council house they should live rent free.

At the conclusion of the general business the Council went into committee to consider the question of the extension of their boundaries.
