Rents to Rise at Conisbro’

Council house rents in Conisbrough urban district are to rise by 3/3d a week from April 1st.

The Council sanctioned the increase on Wednesday with an increase in the annual contribution to the Housing Repairs Fund from £14 to £16 per house, which Coun. T. Hill said was due to increasing repair and maintenance costs.

He said there was an estimated deficit of £6,632 in the housing revenue account for the current financial year, and a preliminary estimate for 1965-66 showed a deficiency of over £11,000 if no increase was to be made.

In the light of the continuance of the slum clearance programme, the financial situation had to be reviewed, he said.

Coun. Hill added that it was estimated that in the current financial year average expenditure per house would amount to £16/17/11d, and it was considered necessary to increase the contribution from £14 to £16.

Rents in Conisbrough last rose in 1962 by two shillings a week on pre-war houses and three shillings on post war houses.
